By Ruth Volk
Gauge:
4 sc by 4 rows = a 1-inch square
Crochet Hook:
Size "H"
Burial Size
Finished size: Approximately 14" by 16"
Materials: 4 oz. Worsted weight yarn
Ch 52
Newborn Size
Finished size: Approximately 30" by 35"
Materials: 16 oz. Worsted weight yarn
Ch 100
DIRECTIONS:
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: (Skip 2 sts, dc in 3rd st, ch 1, cross backwards over the dc just completed, working a dc in the 1st skipped st) = 1 Cross Stitch. Repeat across, ending with a dc in the last st. Ch 3, turn. (16 Cross-stitches for burial size, 32 for newborn size)
Row 3: Dc in each stitch across. (50 stitches for burial size, 98 for newborn size, including the beginning ch3)
Repeat rows 2 & 3 until afghan measures the needed length (12 inches for burial size, 33 inches for newborn size).
Edge Row 1: Ch 1, work 2 sc in corner. Turn afghan to the side and sc along left edge, bottom, right edge, then the top edge. Corners: Work 2 sc in each corner. Join with a sl st in the 1st sc at top left corner.
Edge Row 2: Ch3, work Cross stitches all around outside edges. At the very corners, make the cross stitches narrower by skipping only 1 st, and working the 1st dc of the cross in the 2nd st, and the 2nd dc in the 1st st. End with a sl st in the top of the starting ch-3.
Edge Row 3: Sl st in top of next dc. * Sl st in the next ch-1 space (the middle of the cross stitch). Sc in same ch-1 space. Ch 3, sl st in top of sc just worked; ch 2. * Sc in next ch-1 space (middle of the next cross stitch); ch 3, sl st in top of the same sc just worked (picot); ch 2. Repeat from * around all sides. For the corners, ch3 (rather than ch 2) before and after the corner picot. End with a sl st in the 1st sc at the top left corner.
