Ruth's Cross-Stitch Bonnet

Gauge:
4 sc by 4 rows = a 1-inch square
Size "G" crochet hook
Materials:
1 oz. sport weight yarn.
Newborn Size
Ch 45
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch. * Ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 2-5: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 6: * (Skip 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1. Crossing over the dc just made, work 1 dc in the first skipped st.) = 1 cross st. Repeat from * across. End with a dc in the last st. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 7-9: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 10: * (Skip 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1. Crossing over the dc just made, work 1 dc in the first skipped st.) = 1 cross st. Repeat from * across. End with a dc in the last st. Ch 3, turn.
Row 11: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Fasten off.
Ties & Edging: Ch 40 (right tie). Sc in 1st st of the last row of bonnet, and in the next st. Picot (sc in next st, ch 3, sc in the top of the sc just worked). * Ch 3, skip 2 sts, picot in the next st. Repeat from * across. Sc in the last 2 sts. Ch 40 (left tie). Fasten off. Trim tie ends to 1 inch.
Finishing: Gather the 1st row worked, either with a ch of yarn or a narrow (1/4 inch) satin ribbon, about 5 inches long, tieing in a bow to fasten off.
Preemie Size
Ch 39
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch. * Ch 1, skip 1 st, sc in next st. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 2-3: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: * (Skip 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1. Crossing over the dc just made, work 1 dc in the first skipped st.) = 1 cross st. Repeat from * across. End with a dc in the last st. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 5-6: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Ch 3, turn.
Row 7: * (Skip 2 sts, dc in the next st, ch 1. Crossing over the dc just made, work 1 dc in the first skipped st.) = 1 cross st. Repeat from * across. End with a dc in the last st. Ch 3, turn.
Row 8: Dc in 2nd st and in each st across. Fasten off.
Ties & Edging: Ch 35 (right tie). Sc in 1st st of the last row of bonnet, and in the next st. Picot (sc in next st, ch 3, sc in the top of the sc just worked). * Ch 3, skip 2 sts, picot in the next st. Repeat from * across. Sc in the last 2 sts. Ch 35 (left tie). Fasten off. Trim tie ends to 1 inch.
